Bird Flu in Asia Bird Flu
by Dr. Suet Ting Lau    Consultant Doctor/Princess Margaret Hospital, Hong Kong.

Since January 2004, the outbreak of flu among chickens and other birds have been reported throughout the world especially in many Asian countries. This year, it has gained worldwide attention because it affected humans with severe illness causing 33 confirmed cases with 22 deaths in Vietnam and Thailand. The epidemic is evolving and measures to control the spread were implemented. Millions of infected poultry have been disposed.

It was suspected that the virus is present in wild or domestic bird reservoirs including quail, goose, teal, ducks, and chickens. Previously, the Avian or Bird Flu virus affects birds only. However, 18 and 2 human cases were documented in 1997 and 2003 in Hong Kong. Humans can be infected by new strains of the virus when in close contact.

The illness is similar to other influenza virus presenting with fever, headache, muscle ache, running nose, cough, and sore throat. However, a more severe form with high fever, chest infection, resulting in respiratory failure, multi-organ failure and death can occur.

Droppings of the infected live birds and poultry may carry the virus. To prevent the disease, one has to build up good resistance. After coming into contact with live birds or their droppings, wash hand thoroughly with soap and water.
